Polished Concrete

Concrete Polishing, Sealing or Epoxy | Industrial Flooring Choices

When it comes to industrial or commercial flooring there are many options. Concrete Polishing, Sealing and Epoxy Coatings are becoming more and more popular for many reasons. The existing concrete slab can polished, ground and sealed or coated with a commercial coating such as epoxy. Each have their own unique looks and advantages that include durability, longevity and ease of cleaning are just a few. In this post we will share our Day’s Creteworx perspective on a couple of the finishes. This is a taste of some of the conversations we enjoy with our clients as we discover the best option for them, during our hassle free site review.

Concrete Polishing

Polished concrete is very attractive and enhances a space with its natural properties. It is also very versatile because it can be stained any color providing opportunity to be in concert with interior decor or company branding. With our diamond studded tooling it is designed specifically for polishing concrete, we make many passes. Much like sandpaper, our tooling has a wide range of grits. As rough as 40 and as fine as 3000 grit.

Like most everything, there are pros and cons to concrete polishing. They will become dull over time, and require buffing occasionally.

Grind and Seal
A grind and seal project is similar, yet different in many ways. Much like polishing concrete we start by making a couple passes to achieve a smoother finish, especially if there is uneven concrete, but not to a polished finished. Once grinding is complete, we apply a clear primer coat. This primer will allow the top coat to bind well with the top coat. Once the primer coat is dry, we apply urethane based coating. The finish coat is very versatile, with options to be high gloss, satin or even a matter finish. All can be tinted or stained to a variety of colors.

This process is more durable because of the protective coating that has been applied and can easily be refreshed by applying another coating of urethane.

Epoxy Coatings

Often seen in warehouses with forklifts and other machinery, epoxy coatings are fantastic for high traffic areas. The thickness and durability is superior when properly applied. Epoxy is a fantastic solution for older concrete that may have been damaged or repaired over the years.

The approach for epoxy is very different than concrete polishing or the grind and seal methods. It is very durable, chemically resistant and available in a number of designs and finishes.
